Navien NPE-240A2 Installation
Video Description
Here we are today May 13th 2021 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Our client here Jim, has asked to have us replace this 50 gallon power vented gas water heater, that's 11 years old.
We will be Updating it to an High Efficient 95% Gas Navien Tankless wall hung water heater. That we are going to hang up right there and reuse some of this old venting for our new air intake.
Then we have this water meter here where somebody recently installed a water filter and did a really nice job, but then left the irrigation system tied in, so it’s getting filtered water, which is unnecessary.
So we’re going to re-pipe that so that its not sending filtered water out to the grass. We’re also going to remove this black plug that someone put in here that is not supposed to be there and will rust right out and is just asking for trouble.
We are also going to add a Hot water Recirculation line.
This client has a very long run of piping through the house.
These Navien High Efficient units have built in recirculation available so were going to find somewhere up in the ceiling to find the end of the of the hot water line and we’re going to add a return water line back to the Navien so that they will not have to wait and waste water waiting for the hot water to get to there faucets.
Here is Michael T. “Pipes” DiBacco getting ready to do another Navien Install!
He already has the old unit drained and cut out for us.
Outside here we have our two ships here, both members of the DiBacco Plumbing Fleet.
Mike’s new van that is getting lettered next week and of course the Flagship of our Fleet.
Stay tuned for the completed install.

A Water Heater is The Biggest Fixture in your Home
One of the biggest fixtures in a home that most people take for granted is also one of the most important: your water heater.
It’s one of those items that you don’t spend too much time thinking about, but it truly does impact your life in a big way. They’re responsible for that refreshing, relaxing shower you take in the morning before you head off to work. They’re what makes it possible to get piping hot water out of the tap whenever you want it. The list goes on and on.
The Most Expensive Fixture in your Home?
But at the same time, one of the most crucial appliances in your home can also quickly become one of the most expensive if you’re not careful. According to one recent study conducted by the United States Department of Energy, the average hot water heater cost for operation accounts for roughly 18% of your entire home’s energy use on average. Obviously, these costs will increase if you’re working with a 40 gallon water heater or larger. Even a 40 gallon electric water heater can still use a tremendous amount of energy – and that’s before you get into the amount of money you’ll have to invest in things like hot water heater repair.
So if you’re in the market for a new water heater and you’re looking for something that is equal parts cost-effective and efficient, there are a number of reasons why you’ll want to consider a tankless hot water heater that are more than worth exploring.
The Benefits of a Tankless Hot Water Heater: An Overview
Also commonly referred to as an on demand water heater, a tankless hot water heater is capable of delivering between 4.5 to 8.5 gallons of hot water per minute for your home. So long as you install the right size tank in your home, you’ll always have water that is the absolute perfect temperature every time you jump in the shower. Obviously, your needs will vary depending on how many people live with you. Smaller families may be able to get away with a 40 gallon electric water heater, while others may require a 50 gallon electric water heater or larger. With all of that considered, however, it’s easy to see how this is a better option than even something like a water heater expansion storage tank for your existing 40 gallon gas water heater.
But still – even a 50 gallon water heater will provide instant access to the hot water you want, all while allowing you to dramatically reduce your utility bills at the exact same time.
Energy Savings?
Indeed, it’s those instant savings that make a tankless hot water heater more than worth the investment for most families. Keep in mind that a tankless gas water heater is essentially “off” when you’re not using the water. Because of that, they use far less energy than their counterparts. Another recent study indicated that investing in an Energy Star certified tankless hot water heater can reduce your hot water consumption by between 25 and 40% every year. For the average family, that breaks down to roughly $100 of savings.
Meet the Demand of Modern Living
Not only that, but you’re talking about an appliance that is simply better suited to meet the demands of modern living. A gas tankless water heater will take up far less space than a gas hot water heater, for example. You also have multiple fuel sources to choose from, with a propane tankless water heater being another prime example. A solar water heater would also be another option.
Safety First
Tankless water heaters are also considered to be far safer than their conventional counterparts, as those traditional water heater options are essentially always “turned on.” This means they pose more of a safety risk for you and your family than a tankless heater ever will, because those tankless options only operate when hot water is actually needed.
Longer Lifespan
But for many, one of the most important advantages of all is that a tankless water heater will almost always come with a far longer lifespan than their traditional counterparts. Because traditional hot water heaters see such heavy use, it’s estimated that they really only last for approximately 5 to 7 years or so. Tankless hot water heaters, on the other hand, can last for 15 to 20 years or more if properly maintained or cared for.
Trouble-Free Service? Navien Tankless Water Heater
Take Navien tankless hot water heaters, for example. Navien was actually the first provider to offer dual stainless steel heat exchangers, which are far better at resisting issues like corrosion than options made with copper. Thanks to this, along with Navien’s advanced technology and innovative craftsmanship, come together to offer you an option that will offer trouble-free service for years to come.
Navien is a notable provider because they make the number one condensing tankless water heater available anywhere in North America today. The NPE-2 series comes in two different variants for you to choose from depending on your needs – standard and advanced. The NPE-A2 advanced unit comes with a built-in circulation system that can reheat water in your supply lines with a recirculation loop, thus providing you even easier access to that hot water you crave. It also features durable dual corrosion resistant stainless steel heat exchangers and burners, which will stand the test of time far better than something like copper will.
Cost Consideration
These are all things to consider when you’re taking a closer look at water heater replacement cost and water heater installation costs moving forward.
Truly, the only major “downside” to a tankless water heater is the tankless water heater cost. Yes, it’s absolutely true on average that a tankless gas water heater will initially cost more than a conventional gas water heater counterpart. But when you consider all of the major benefits that you get that you won’t be able to achieve anywhere else, it’s easy to see how this is one investment that will quickly begin to pay for itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About an On Demand Water Heater
What are the signs my water heater needs replaced?
If you currently have a conventional water heater in your home, there are a few key signs to be aware of that may indicate a replacement is in your future. In addition to rusting on either the hot water tank or in the water itself, you should listen for noises and pay attention to any leaks that you see. Likewise, a general lack of hot water is also a big warning sign of problems that you should have addressed.
How do Navien NPE-2 tankless water heaters work?
Navien’s premium line of condensing, tankless water heaters work by heating water directly without using a storage tank – hence the name. Cold water is transported directly into the unit whenever you turn on a hot water faucet in your home. At that point, the dual heat exchanger instantly heats the water before passing it onto you – creating that perfect, endless stream of hot water at all times.
How much energy can I save with a tankless hot water heater?
According to one recent study, the average home uses approximately 41 gallons of hot water on a daily basis. Therefore, a heat pump water heater can be between 24 and 34% more energy efficient than their counterparts. Even for homes that use a lot of water every day – think 85+ gallons or so – they can still be between 8 and 14% more energy efficient.
